Former England star Wayne Rooney didn’t appreciate being let go from his job as Birmingham manager.
Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has issued a statement after being fired by Birmingham City.
Rooney was sacked from his post at Sant Andrews on Tuesday. An outcome that he had difficulty digesting. Barely dismissed, he spoke out to denounce the mistreatment of which he was a victim.
Rooney wanted more time
He posted a message on social media: “I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity given to me to manage Birmingham City and for the support they have given me during my short time with the club. Football is a results-oriented business and I admit we haven’t reached the level I wanted. But time is the most precious thing for a manager, and I don’t think 13 weeks was enough to see the changes that were necessary. It will be a while before I recover from this failure. “
This is Rooney’s second experience in the Championship, after the one he had at Derby County. At the Rams, he was not much more successful as he was unable to avoid their relegation to League One. This coaching job has drained him and he now hopes to be able to take a breather.
“I have been involved in professional football as a player or manager since the age of 16, he recalled. Now I want to take advantage of my time to be with my family while preparing for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager. Finally, I wish Birmingham City and its owners the best.”
