Present at the gala match organized last May for the 100th anniversary of Lescure, Yoann Gourcuff was able to measure its popularity with the Bordeaux public. When the players were introduced, his name had indeed triggered a huge clamor. If in the applause meter he had done better than two other idols of the club, or even of the French team, Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry, he had on the other hand had to bow to Zinedine Zidane, hero of an entire country, and Alain Giresse, THE legend of the Girondins.
And these results in the applause meter are also verified in the polls. This is evidenced by the consultation launched on social networks by the Girondins Rétro account. Eager to draw up the best eleven in history for the club’s scapular supporters, the account invited its subscribers to nominate the best Bordeaux players, position by position.

Unsurprisingly, Girondins fans gave pride of place to Bordeaux players from the 80s, four times champions of France. Marius Trésor, Patrick Battiston, Jean Tigana, Bernard Lacombe, Jean-Christophe Thouvenel and obviously Alain Giresse were in the spotlight. But to accompany Alain Giresse in the midfield, the supporters chose an idol of the Girondins and especially of the France team: Zinedine Zidane.
With 20% of the votes, compared to 23.5% for Alain Giresse, the 1998 world champion is well ahead of Yoann Gourcuff, only third with 16%. Having stayed four years in Bordeaux, the former Cannes player has a very limited track record with the Girondins, with an Intertoto Cup in 1995 and a UEFA Cup final. In two seasons, Yoann Gourcuff can, however, boast a title of champion of France in 2010 – the last won by the Girondins -, with the title of best player in Ligue 1, then a good run in the Ligue des champions, concluded in the quarter-finals.
