His last – and only – appearance in the Three Lions jersey dates back to 2020, during a Nations League match against Iceland. Following this, he was charged with serious criminal offenses, which marked the end of his international adventure.
Renaissance of the striker at OM
After being left out of the United team in 2023, despite legal proceedings being dropped, Greenwood briefly played in Spain, at Getafe, on loan, before being transferred permanently to Marseille in 2024. It was in France that the winger finally had the opportunity to relaunch his professional career.
Greenwood had an excellent first season in Ligue 1, scoring 21 goals in 34 games. Marseille finished second in the championship, behind European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
This season, he picked up where he left off. The 24-year-old has already scored eight Ligue 1 goals in eleven appearances and provided three assists.
Greenwood still dreams of playing for England again.
According to the Daily Mail, after regaining his form in France, Greenwood now dreams of making a return to the Three Lions. And this, despite being sidelined by the FA and Tuchel. A few months before the 2026 World Cup, a return of Greenwood to the selection is all the more improbable. However, the former Manchester United youth player “ believes he can play for England again.”
Greenwood obtained Jamaican citizenship by descent and was eligible to represent his country. He was even summoned by Jamaican coach and former England coach, Steve McClaren, in September for World Cup qualifying, but the latter failed to contact the Marseille star.
Will Greenwood play for Jamaica?
Despite Greenwood’s absence, McClaren remains hopeful of seeing him make his national team debut soon.
Explaining his absence from the team in September, the coach said: “ We got his passport and were expecting this internship, but after a discussion with his family, he doesn’t want to get involved with anyone at the moment. He takes his time. It’s a bit disappointing, we probably need to be more patient. We stay in touch. We will continue to seek him out because I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves and respects Jamaica. He wants to concentrate on his club and not commit to a national team for the moment. We must respect his choice, despite all our efforts to ensure that he is present at these courses. So who knows what the future holds? »
