This summer, Paris Saint-Germain tried a clever move. Despite Gianluigi Donnarumma's XXL campaign in the Champions League, the capital club has decided to part ways with the Italian goalkeeper. A choice which surprised more than one but which can be explained by the complex contractual situation of the doorman who, one year from the end of his contract, refused to negotiate a new contract at a discount. From then on, the Parisian team decided to focus on a goalkeeper who was on the rise in Ligue 1: Lucas Chevalier.
Author of a superb season with LOSC and remarkable performances in the Champions League, the 23-year-old goalkeeper did not hesitate and jumped at the opportunity by joining the European champion to take over from the Italian. However, the Frenchman's first performances have already earned him some criticism and the situation with Matvey Safonov is tense. Knight's double after having been that of Donnarumma, the Russian goalkeeper could estimate that he can perform better than the native of Calais since the start of the season.
Matvey Safonov could leave PSG
While he had said that he was coming to Paris to be a starter, the former Krasnodar goalkeeper has never hidden his great ambitions on the banks of the Seine. Obviously, following the less stellar performances of the new goalkeeper, Safonov aspires to turn things around or, at a minimum, to have a role as number one with Chevalier. However, the 26-year-old goalkeeper has not played a single match since the start of the season. A situation which has the gift of irritating the latter.
This Saturday, The Team goes even further and affirms that Safonov is starting to get impatient and that an imminent departure can no longer be ruled out. In Russia, PSG number 39 explained to Sport-Express that he was unhappy with his current situation in Paris: “my future will have to wait until the transfer window opens. For now, I'm devoting all my time to getting things back on track. I want to prove that I deserve to play; the lack of time does not satisfy me. (…) Any offer must be studied, so everything depends on the situation at the time of the transfer window.» Interest from Russia could revolve around a loan this winter.
