There is a new leader in the Fifa rankings, and it is Spain, crowned world champion this summer. Hervé Renard’s Les Bleues reach third place.
Great first for Spain! After winning its first World Cup victory this summer, La Roja reached first place in the Fifa rankings this Friday for the very first time in its history.
The ranking, which had not been updated since August, takes into account the results of the group stage of the League of Nations played since then. Qualified for the semi-finals, Spain won five victories in six matches, notably beating Sweden twice (3-2, 5-3), the previous leader of the Fifa ranking, which fell to fifth place.
Best ranking equaled for France
And the French team in all this? Hervé Renard’s Bleues are also reaping the benefits of their good Nations League group stage, completed with five victories, a draw and the ticket to the last four (the Tricolores will face Germany in the semi-final). France gained two places and moved up to third place, thus equaling the best ranking in its history, which had been achieved several times in recent years.
Les Bleues are behind the United States (2nd) but ahead of England (4th), Sweden (5th), Germany (6th), the Netherlands (7th) and Japan (8th). Also note the good progression of Italy (14th, +3 places) while Brazil (11th) leaves the Top 10.
