Manhandled on its lawn by Lecce, AS Roma managed to turn the situation around thanks to two goals scored in stoppage time (2-1, 11th day of Serie A).
The ball really didn’t go far for AS Rome. Beaten by Inter Milan on the last day of the championship (1-0), José Mourinho’s men came very close to a second setback in a row this Sunday, when they hosted Lecce. But thanks to two unexpected goals scored in the final moments of the match, the Romans won in a melting stadium (2-1, 11th day of Serie A). This success allows them to recover eighth place, one point behind Europe.
It all started badly for the locals as Romelu Lukaku missed a penalty obtained in the fifth minute. On the Lecces side, the team was well in place and it was in the second half that the visitors struck a big blow to take the advantage, with a goal from Pontus Almqvist (0-1, 72nd). A blow ultimately not powerful enough to completely knock out the Louve players who had the merit of believing in it until the end.
Lecce not paid, Lukaku redeems himself
And so it was in stoppage time of the match that Sardar Azmoun first brought his team back to the level (1-1, 90th+1) before Romelu Lukaku, a sign of destiny, redeemed himself from his missed penalty , scoring the winning goal three minutes later (2-1, 90th+4). Rumbling in the stands of the Stadio Olimpico, especially as the referee whistled the end of the match a few moments later. If the operation is good for Roma, it is on the other hand a real blow for Lecce (11th) who surely deserved more and who remain on a terrible series of seven games in a row without a victory, in all competitions.
