Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned for 10 months after admitting to betting on matches he took part in during his time playing for AC Milan.
Tonali admitted to betting on matches he participated in and negotiated a 10-month ban with Italian prosecutors. Without his cooperation, the Italian international would have received a three-year suspension.
Tonali is not the only Italian player to face suspension, as Nicolo Zaniolo (Aston Villa) and Nicolo Fagioli (Juventus) are also implicated in the betting scandal. The latter has already been banned for seven months.
Tonali seemed to realize he was about to fall, as he embarked on a lap of honor following the Magpies’ 4-0 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, and he has now was informed of his sanction. Tonali will miss the remainder of the Premier League season and Euro 2024, if Italy qualify.
FIGC (Italian Football Federation) President Gabriele Gravina said: “The FIGC prosecutor and Tonali reached an agreement which I have already approved.
“The agreement consists of a 10-match suspension, plus eight months of rehabilitation activities and at least 16 appearances.”
