It’s no secret that FC Barcelona have been looking to strengthen their midfield during the summer period.
The departure of Sergio Busquets allowed the arrival of Oriol Romeu from Girona, but Catalan coach Xavi Hernandez wanted other reinforcements.
However, the Catalans failed to sign another midfielder before the deadline. According to The Teamone of the players sought was Marco Verratti, considered surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain.
FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea tried to sign Verratti on a season-long loan, but PSG rejected all these offers and prepared to permanently sell the Italian international, who is preparing to join the Qatari club Al-Arabi.
If FC Barcelona had been able to recruit Verratti under acceptable financial conditions, it would have carried out a sensational operation and would undoubtedly have acquired one of the best midfielders in Europe. But that is not the case for the reigning La Liga champions.
