The Polish striker, who will be 37 years old in August, scored 30 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions, his last goal being the victorious goal against Alaves last weekend.
Due to his age, Barcelona began to seek a possible successor in Lewandowski, and transfers could be made this summer. However, the one who will join the club will have to compete with the veteran, because it is almost certain that he will remain in the workforce of Hansi Flick until the end of next season.
It has already been said that the current Lewandowski contract expires this summer, but with a clause that triggers an automatic extension of one year if a certain number of appearances are made during the current campaign. This is not the case, although the clause itself is somewhat similar.
Unless one more season
According to Sport, the Lewandowski contract with FC Barcelona runs until 2026, which will remain at least one more season. However, the club had the opportunity to unilaterally trigger a contract termination for this summer if it played less than 55 % of official matches for the Catalan giants during the current campaign.
In the current state of things, Lewandowski reached 50.8 %, and only three additional appearances would allow him to exceed the 55 %threshold. Thus, Barcelona should ensure that he does not play more than two games if he wants to have the possibility of shortening this 12 -month stay.
There is no doubt that Lewandowski has been a very good recruit for Barcelona since his arrival from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022. If he can continue to score as many goals during the next and a half season, there will be no problem as to its continuity. However, given that he continues to retreat in terms of global game, we can worry about his maintenance as an undisputed holder.
