It is the biggest transfer in the history of football to date. In the summer of 2017, Paris Saint-Germain broke the bank to afford Neymar. The Parisian club blew up the player’s release clause to the tune of 222 million euros.

A transfer that took football to a new dimension. Between suspense and twists and turns, this deal between the Rouge et Bleu and the Brazilian was the real soap opera of this summer of 2017.

However, some people did not want the transfer to take place. This is the case of the Catalan leaders but also of Neymar’s father. During an interview with the media
ForçaBarça, the player’s father revealed that he wanted his son to continue with the Barça squad.

Why did he choose to go to Paris? It’s strange. We didn’t know what Barça’s management was really thinking. It was as if they wanted Ney to take a position he didn’t want. He didn’t want to be the first, the star of the team. I really wanted my son to stay in Barcelona and in the last days before his departure, we did everything to make him stay, but he left because he didn’t want to put himself in the place of the biggest Barcelona star. He decided and said: “I will go to Paris where I will be just a member of the team,” he told the Catalan media.

Although he was often affected by injuries and failed to bring back the Champions League and win a Ballon d’Or, Neymar’s visit nevertheless left its mark. The number 10 played 173 matches with a total of 118 goals, making him the 4th top scorer in the club’s history behind Mbappé, Cavani and Ibrahimovic.
