Irresistible in the sky and white jersey, Chris Waddle was between 1989 and 1992, an iconic figure of the steamroller that was then Bernard Tapie’s OM. Although he did not go as far as winning the Champions League in 1993, the former England international largely contributed to Marseille’s performances and reputation at the time. By his pranks but also and above all his technique of remarkable finesse.
Even today, the former left-handed winger – now 65 – remains an avid follower of Marseille’s performances. With kindness, always, if we are to believe his words in an interview given to MadeInFOOT. “ I love Marseille. I spent three years there and loved the experience. I am therefore attached to the club and the supporters. They want to compete with PSG, and Marseille is big enough to do it », he breathes, still full of hope.
This season, however, the renewal appears very delicate. “
OM started the season rather well, before going through a difficult period. But the team is regaining good momentumestimates the former will-o-the-wisp, resolutely optimistic. Marseille has been unpredictable for years, but nothing stops it from stringing together a few victories and finishing in the top 3 or top 4. »
A new shareholder hoped for
Chris Waddle, however, points to an area of necessary improvement for OM. “ Instability is also a problem. Every transfer window, we have the impression that five players leave and five others arrive. Marseille did not benefit from sufficient stability. » And to add, in fact: “ It’s difficult to see Marseille struggling against clubs that are absolutely not of the same size. But I am convinced that the club will eventually come back. »
Salvation could come through a new investor, a new shareholder or a new owner. “ One day, someone will look at Marseille and say to themselves: “What a stadium, what an audience! We can fill this enclosure every week and restore the club to its greatness. » I hope I can see that. Every year I tell myself that maybe this is the season when things will finally change. I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed for a long time! »
