Manchester United: Antony is missing

Two years ago, Manchester United announced the arrival of Antony. The Brazilian winger was coming off good seasons at Ajax Amsterdam and looked like the bargain of the summer. But as is often the case with the Dutch club, you had to pay a high price to afford the player who was barely 22 years old at the time. The Red Devils, pushed by Erik ten Hag who knew him very well, were the only ones to match the 100 million euros requested. Two years later, it is time to take stock of what has been quite a flop.

After a very complicated start, Antony hoped to succeed in acclimatizing to the English championship. But like his team known for destroying some talents in recent years, the native of São Paulo failed to exist and went through the seasons like a real ghost. After a first year with 47 matches (10 goals, 5 assists), Antony lost the confidence of his staff and continued with a non-existent following season in which he only scored 3 small goals (2 assists) in 38 matches. A flop decried by the English press which never spared it and which often recalled the colossal sum spent by the Mancunian management.

Nobody wants it back

A long descent into hell for the Brazilian which continues to continue. Having logically become an undesirable person, we then discussed a logical departure to get back on track. But his agent quickly debunked the rumor. “I see reports of a potential loan departure. Antony’s plan is clear: Manchester United. He wants to stay, he only focuses on this club. We have already spoken about it with the club. » A choice that didn’t pay off at all. On the contrary. This season, Antony has fallen down the hierarchy and even comes after the young Ivorian international Amad Diallo. Proof of his downgrade, he only played 4 small matches this season (1 start in the Carabao Cup, 49 minutes of play in total in PL and C3).

According to information from the English press and in particular from Daily MirrorManchester United even abandoned the idea of seeing him succeed in England. The player has clearly been placed on the transfer list and Erik ten Hag, who liked him, no longer wants him. Problem, no club wants to recover the player in a direct transfer since he has an XXL salary and Manchester United will not want to sell him off. The most credible hypothesis therefore remains a loan next January. But again, no one is rushing. So much so that the player’s entourage sounded out Ajax Amsterdam for a potential return. The Dutch club could be tempted to recover him, but only on loan. A fiasco to the end…
