Despite a historic season in the cages of Paris Saint-Germain, Gianluigi Donnarumma chose to leave the Parisian adventure after not having reached an agreement with his managers on a contract extension. The Italian goalkeeper has decided to join Manchester City, in the Premier League, for 35 million euros. Arriving on the last day of the transfer window, the former PSG goalkeeper quickly proved decisive and won his starting place with Pep Guardiola.
However, Gianluigi Donnarumma was not supposed to be number 1. Indeed, James Trafford had snubbed Newcastle United to join Manchester City from Burnley for around 30 million euros and believed to be the Skyblues’ starting goalkeeper. But the arrival of Donnarumma changed everything for the English international goalkeeper, who had started during the first three days of the Premier League, before being content to be the Italian goalkeeper’s understudy, for a total of eight matches played, in all competitions.
James Trafford didn’t know about Gianluigi Donnarumma
And inevitably, this goes badly for the young 23-year-old goalkeeper, who did not hesitate to talk about all his frustration by revealing that he was not aware of Gigio’s arrival. “I didn’t expect this situation to happen, but it did, so you have to deal with it. Now it’s done. So I’m going to work very hard every day and we’ll see what happens. I’m going to take it step by step, try to work as hard as possible and come what may.”he reacted to Daily Mailhe who risks losing his place with the Three Lions, with a view to the 2026 World Cup.
“It’s just another experience to add to my career and a good learning experience. Obviously everyone knows about my situation, so I just have to play the best I can every time I play. I definitely have a contract. I don’t know what will happen next season. I just know that I’m going to take it step by step and try to improve.”added Trafford, visibly frustrated with his situation. However, the English doorman does not hold a grudge against his colleague, whom he recognizes as “a great goalkeeper and a great guy”.
