Morocco wanted to strike hard for its next international break. After having once again confirmed its rise to power on the world stage, the Moroccan selection would have sought to offer itself a prestigious opponent in October. The FRMF would have tried to convince Argentina to come and play in Rabat, without achieving its goals.
According to Argentine journalist Verónica Brunati, the Moroccan Federation offered nearly a million dollars to the AFA to organize this friendly meeting. A particularly substantial financial offer, which reflected the ambition of the Atlas Lions to continue to compete with the greatest nations. An opposition against the Albiceleste would also have allowed Mohamed Ouahbi to measure his team against one of the benchmarks of world football.
But this proposal would not have convinced the Argentine Federation. Still according to Verónica Brunati, the AFA would have preferred to decline the Moroccan invitation. A choice which would not be linked to the quality of the opponent, but more to Argentina’s desire to play its next matches in front of its own audience.
Another opponent to find
The Argentine Federation is currently working on the outlines of its next meeting, with several elements still to be resolved concerning the opponents, dates and stadiums. In this context, a trip to Rabat would therefore not be part of the Albiceleste’s priorities. Morocco must therefore review its plans for the month of October.
The FRMF will now have to find another poster to continue its preparation for the very high level. After its semi-final in 2022 and its quarter-final in 2026, Morocco wishes to maintain this habit of challenging the big selections. An ambition which could have come true with Argentina, but which the Atlas Lions will ultimately have to postpone until a future opportunity.
