Real Madrid’s bad luck could have serious consequences in the long term. After several internal meetings, the managers and technicians of the Merengue club now agree on the need for targeted adjustments. Two positions are particularly of concern to Valdebebas: that of central defender and that of defensive midfielder, identified as priorities in sporting reflection after the shortcomings observed since the start of the season.
If Florentino Perez and his teams want to give time, the debacle against Benfica (4-2, January 28) has nevertheless revived certain concerns, while they seemed to have eased after the departure of Xabi Alonso and the first steps of Álvaro Arbeloa. However, Real does not intend to change its guideline in the short term, despite calls for immediate recruitment. Yet, A.S. explains that internally, the observation is clear: the team needs profiles capable of providing more control with the ball and more physical impact.
Vitinha and Kees Smit still favorites
The club, however, remains very reluctant to act during the winter transfer window, despite proposals received in recent days. Some players, particularly in defense, are considered to be at the end of their cycle and could live out their last months in the Merengue jersey. Another decision taken, in midfield, Real Madrid wishes to remain faithful to its strategy: banking on players under 20 years old, unless there is a free opportunity. Vitinha, already mentioned as the dream of Real Madrid, is unanimous on the sporting level, but the position of PSG seriously complicates the file.
Other trails are being studied, including the one leading to Kees Smit (AZ Alkmaar). Finally, regarding Álvaro Arbeloa, the future will directly depend on the next results, he who lost credit with his locker room this week. Despite the latest results, the club wants to be patient and ensures that no contact has been made with another coach at this stage. Real Madrid therefore wants to give its new manager time, while preparing major maneuvers for next summer. Without talking about “cleaning”, an expression considered excessive internally, the club wants to return to the forefront as quickly as possible.
