Paris is no longer untouchable. Beaten in Monaco (1-0) on the last day, PSG lost the lead in the championship to Lens, and sees Marseille and Barcelona returning to its European rearview mirror. A new poor performance this Saturday against Rennes, and doubts could set in again. For Luis Enrique, it’s time to restart the machine, especially in a Parc des Princes where Paris remains undefeated in Ligue 1 this season… but where it has only beaten Rennes once in the last three league games.
Rennes without complexes
Habib Beye has transformed Rennes. After a chaotic start to the season, the Bretons have scored four consecutive victories in Ligue 1, with ten goals scored and only two conceded. They also kept a clean sheet in their last two away games. This series allows them to be in fifth place, six lengths behind PSG. They know that winning in Paris is possible: Rennes is, with Monaco, the club which has beaten Paris most often in Ligue 1 since the QSI era (7 times), including 4 times… at the Parc.
PSG has already conceded two defeats this season, as many as in the 34 days of last season. And his offensive stats, although flattering (39 consecutive matches with at least one goal at home), hide a drop in realism: only 2 goals in their last 9 big chances. Rennes, for its part, converts 60% of its big opportunities, an impressive ratio. Estéban Lepaul and Breel Embolo form an effective duo (10 and 5 contributions respectively), while Bradley Barcola, author of 4 goals against Rennes in his career, could play a key role on the Parisian side.
Paris no longer has the right to make mistakes
With only one point behind Lens but a schedule that promises to be tricky, PSG cannot afford any missteps. Especially since the last time Rennes went 7 games without defeat away from home was in 2018… with a 2-0 victory at the Parc. The capital club, if it wants to avoid repeating such a mishap, will have to combine defensive rigor (only 5 clean sheets in 14 days) and offensive efficiency. Anything but easy against the most in-form team in November.
