The good start to the season against Strasbourg (4-0) is already a thing of the past. Since this great inaugural victory, Olympique de Marseille have in fact suffered two defeats. However, Marseille fans are not (yet) angry with their players but with Frank McCourt, the owner of the Marseille club. The reason? The austerity cure desired by the American businessman.
The recent transfer market thus turned into a big fire sale: while OM let several executives leave to replenish the coffers and reduce the payroll, the recruit counter remained desperately stuck at zero. As a result, the club is approaching this exercise with a reduced workforce and a feeling of abandonment.
“Liar or incompetent? “
The reception of the PFC was therefore an opportunity for Marseille supporters, on Sunday, to express their dissatisfaction. Through a series of banners, they crushed the Marseille owner. The first came as a reminder of a media release for the shareholder’s optimistic point: “10-04-26: OM is one of the financially strongest clubs in Europe”. The reply was immediately displayed, stinging and factual: “Review as of 06-09-26: Record deficit, liquidation of the workforce and inability to recruit”. Finally, another banner, painted in red letters, asked the question: “Liar or incompetent? “.
These banners are not an isolated case. Already on August 28, during the first day against Strasbourg, the corners had chanted their disappointment. The supporters then recalled that “hundreds of millions invested over ten years” had resulted in “no title, no team, no ambition… only disillusionment and humiliation”. Between broken financial promises and the reality of a stalled sporting project, the divorce between Marseille fans and Frank McCourt now seems complete.
