Tottenham: A French coach to save Spurs?

The slap received at the Emirates Stadium (1-4) left indelible marks. Humiliated by the sworn enemy of Arsenal, the Spurs are in a sad ninth place and the credit of Thomas Frank is crumbling at high speed. If the management officially assures that they want to give time to the Danish technician, the reality on the ground is cruel: a sterile game with a starving “expected goals” of 0.07 during the derby, tactical choices contested by his own locker room and supporters who grumble. In this end-of-reign climate, speculators are already placing bets on his successor, and a major surprise has slipped into the list.

A Frenchman in place of Thomas Frank?

If regulars like Mauricio Pochettino (the logical favorite) or Oliver Glasner monopolize the top of the ranking, a rating attracts attention among the contenders. At 20/1, we find a French technician: Régis Le Bris. The current manager of Sunderland, who is doing a remarkable job at the head of Black Catsnow appears to be a credible option in the eyes of British bookmakers. For the moment this is only a numerical hypothesis, no formal contact has been confirmed, but seeing his name circulating at this level proves that his method and its results are successfully crossing the Channel.

The former Lorient player does not steal this recognition. His ability to play a young team and obtain convincing results caught the eye of observers. He also has his Championship team in 7th place in the Premier League. Seeing him land on the Spurs bench would be quite a nod to history, him who would become the second French coach to lead the London club after the brief stint of Jacques Santini in 2004. A trajectory which would reward a bold vision of the game, as opposed to the sometimes excessive defensive pragmatism criticized by Thomas Frank in recent weeks.

The week of all dangers for Tottenham

For now, Frank is still in office, but the hourglass is running out quickly. Joao Palhinha may apologize to the fans and promise a “big reaction”, the schedule is merciless. A perilous trip awaits Tottenham this Wednesday in the Champions League against PSG, followed by the reception of Fulham. Across the Channel, Jamie Carragher has already sounded the alarm about the team’s lack of creativity. If the dynamic does not immediately reverse against the Parisians, the patience of Daniel Levy, the boss of Spurs, could reach its limits.

Régis Le Bris remains focused on his mission at Sunderland, but he now knows he is being watched by the elite. In English football, bookmaker odds are often leading indicators of underlying trends. If Tottenham continues to sink into crisis, the prospect of a French construction technician could quickly move from the status of an improbable rating to that of a priority file.
