At 34, Danny Welbeck is enjoying a renaissance at Brighton, proving his journey is still far from over. The English striker, trained at Manchester United, was able to overcome recurring injuries and difficult periods, notably his failed stint at Watford in 2019-2020, where he only scored 2 small goals in the league. Since his arrival at the Seagulls in 2020, Welbeck has gradually returned to his best level, stringing together productive seasons, with 11 goals in all competitions last year and already 6 goals in 13 games this season, including two important doubles against Chelsea (1-3) and Newcastle (2-1). His role as an experienced center forward has become central for Brighton, currently 11th in the Premier League. He brings his experience to young people, like Georginio Rutter (23 years old).

Welbeck’s name was even mentioned by Manchester United during the 2024 winter transfer window, while the Mancunian club was looking for a replacement for Anthony Martial, who left on a free. According to The AthleticErik ten Hag, then coach of the Red Devils, had thought of repatriating the former Gunner to fill this void, saluting his experience and his legacy after a long spell at Old Trafford. Finally, Welbeck extended his contract with Brighton until 2026, but this rumor still underlines the esteem in which his former club held him. He would have brought his experience, technical quality and knowledge of the club, representing a relatively inexpensive arrival to complete a high-profile signing.

The English selection in sight

Although his return to Manchester United did not take place, his current form opens up new prospects for him in the English selection. Danny Welbeck has not played for the Three Lions since September 2018, making 42 caps for 16 goals. However, with 6 goals in the Premier League this season and his consistency displayed under the orders of Fabian Hürzeler at Brighton, voices are being raised to call for his call-up. His coach, Hürzeler, himself supports his player at a press conference: “I’m convinced Danny Welbeck is capable of playing for England… Everyone in the team agrees, that’s the only time we’ve talked about it “. With notable absences and the potential withdrawal of Anthony Gordon, Welbeck was even mentioned by the English media to be called up as reinforcement for the matches against Serbia and Albania in November.

Beyond the statistics and rumors, it is above all his rediscovered confidence and his efficiency which mark the rebirth of Welbeck. Winner of the Premier League with United in 2009 and 2013 and the FA Cup with Arsenal in 2017, he continues to score and make the difference offensively. Last year, he even exceeded that of certain young attackers like Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee, limited to two and three goals respectively. As Wayne Rooney pointed out: “Frankly, I would love to see him still here, playing for Manchester United. He scored throughout his career, overcame injuries and is having a fantastic season.”. Danny Welbeck, between consistency, experience and regularity, seems on the way to a final glorious chapter, which could include a return to the English selection almost 7 years after his last appearance, with a view to the 2026 World Cup.
