FIFA will honor Vinicius Junior at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2024, which takes place this Tuesday in Doha, Qatar. The Brazilian striker from Real Madrid was crowned best player of the year, an award revealed by Geglobo well before the official ceremony.
This award recognizes an exceptional year for Vinicius, author of memorable performances with the Madrid club. At the same time, it has a taste of revenge: the player had narrowly missed the Ballon d’Or, won by Rodri of Manchester City. This choice sparked heated controversy, to the point that the Real Madrid delegation boycotted the ceremony organized in Paris.
Vinicius Junior, first Brazilian rewarded since Kaka in 2007
By winning The Best 2024 award, Vinicius Junior ends a long wait for Brazilian football. He becomes the first player from his country to win this distinction since Kaka in 2007, a source of pride for all of Brazil. It’s also the 8the coronation for this country, as much as for the Argentinian rival (and the 8 victories of Lionel Messi).
The absence of Rodri and Manchester City players from the evening ceremony is symbolic. Except that it was for logistical and scheduling reasons that they did not go to Qatar. A very different context from that experienced a few months ago.
A trophy that rewards a brilliant year
For Vinicius, this distinction is far from being a simple consolation prize. It crowns a season during which he was a key element in Real Madrid’s success. If the Ballon d’Or escaped him, The Best award confirms his status among the best players on the planet.
