Zidane gives up

Already crowned three times, Kylian Mbappé was elected French Player of the Season. The French phenomenon, author of 52 goals with PSG and the French team during the 2023-2024 financial year, beat (narrowly) William Saliba, as revealed France Football. The newspaper organized the ballot by questioning all the former winners of this individual award launched in 1959. Zinédine Zidane, winner in 1998 and 2002, did not give his podium.

“Zizou” however gave his podium last year, by placing Karim Benzema, his former player at Real Madrid, ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Eduardo Camavinga (Mbappé largely won ahead of “KB9”). This time, the possible future coach of the France team (after the departure of Didier Deschamps in the wake of the 2026 World Cup) preferred not to choose.

Deschamps as Zidane

Besides Zidane, Didier Deschamps, elected French Player of the Year in 1996, did not respond to France Football. The Blues coach has not done so in recent years so as not to have to choose between some of his players. Georges Carnus (winner 1970 and 1971), Michel Platini (1976 and 1977), Sylvain Wiltord (1999), Thierry Henry (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) and Franck Ribéry (2007, 2008 and 2013) did not not answered either.

It should also be noted that Zinédine Zidane, legend of French football, was twice elected French Player of the Year when Thierry Henry is the record holder for this individual distinction with 5 nominations. Kylian Mbappé joins Karim Benzema in second place with this fourth line on the Player of the Year list.
