Winner of Burnley (3-1) without shining, Liverpool retains control of the Premier League, but the threat embodied by Manchester City becomes greater.
The essential is preserved. After their victory this Saturday afternoon against Burnley (3-1), Liverpool are still leaders of the Premier League, and will remain so at the end of the weekend. But the pursuers are becoming more and more pressing, whether it is Arsenal or especially Manchester City.
The Reds were beaten at the Gunners (2-1) last weekend, and the Skyblues did not miss the opportunity to take advantage of it to get closer. Winners on Monday at Brentford (1-3), Pep Guardiola’s men continued this Saturday against Everton (2-0), to temporarily take their place on the throne.
Liverpool had to respond against Burnley, and it was done. But the Reds suffered to tame the 19th in the table at Anfield. After a difficult start to the match, Diogo Jota thought he had done the hardest part by opening the score with a header (1-0, 31st), but Dara O’Shea answered him just before the break, in the same exercise (1- 1, 45th).

In the second half, Luis Diaz put his team back in the right direction (2-1, 52nd), but Burnley had very good 2-2 balls, for Odobert and Fofana (63rd, 67th). And it took Darwin Nunez’s goal to put Liverpool away (3-1, 79th), and ensure what will remain a fairly sluggish success.
In the standings, on the other hand, Liverpool clearly no longer have any margin. Manchester City came back to two points, and the reigning champions still have a game in hand, against Brentford. The duel has only just begun, awaiting the summit clash at Anfield on March 9. And of course we must not forget Arsenal.
