Left out of the Tottenham first team while awaiting his probable departure in January, Hugo Lloris sees his successor Guglielmo Vicario make a perfect start to the season in goal for Spurs. The advanced statistics are glaring.
Without their intractable scorer since 2014, Harry Kane, and without their captain from last season, Hugo Lloris, Tottenham managed to have a great start to the season. Spurs, now masterfully led by Ange Postecoglou, can regain the lead in the Premier League in the event of a victory against Chelsea on Monday evening at home, while they are still undefeated in 10 matches.
Guglielmo Vicario, the new Italian goalkeeper of the London team, is impeccable in his team’s goals. Recruited from Empoli for 20 million euros, the 27-year-old has already established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the English championship. He has only conceded 9 goals this season and he is currently number 1 in save percentage, at 82%, ahead of Alisson (Liverpool) and Bernd Leno (Fulham), who are less than 78%.
Vicario’s talent completely changes the situation for this Tottenham team, less armed offensively but stronger collectively. The numbers are terrible for Lloris. Last season, the captain of the 2018 world champion French team sank to 67.5% in save percentage! The Niçois had the best season of his career with a nice 80.8% in 2019-2020, before faltering for three years.
As a reminder, Lloris, 36, had agreed with his managers to leave last summer, one year before the end of his lease at THFC. The experienced goalkeeper did not find a buyer, notably refusing to join Lazio as an understudy, while being announced in Saudi Arabia, PSG, Real Madrid and even back at OGC Nice. A solution must be found during the winter transfer window…
