CAF announced the draw for its 2026 World Cup qualifiers for Thursday and the 9 seeds are not immune to falling on a strong opponent.
The very first 48-team World Cup, in 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, will offer no less than 9 places to African countries, as well as a ticket for the intercontinental play-offs. CAF has thus opted for qualifications with 9 groups of 6 selections, with the winner of each group directly qualified for the North American World Cup.
The 54 African formations will be fixed this Thursday, during a draw carried out in Abidjan (5 p.m. in France, live on the CAF website), as announced by the African confederation (only) on Tuesday.
Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali and Ivory Coast will be the top seeds, thanks to the Fifa Ranking, but some will have an opponent of size in their hen. No team is immune to failure over a series of 10 matches.
In hat 2, we thus find Ghana, which played in the 2022 World Cup, DR Congo, which was a play-off for the World Cup, as well as Burkina Faso and South Africa, which are not far from the top 50 of the FIFA Ranking. The other opponents will also not be easy to beat across the African continent.
Hat 1: Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Ivory Coast Hat 2: Burkina Faso, Ghana, South Africa, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Guinea, Zambia, Gabon and Guinea- Equatorial.
