May 24, 2012 9:00 am

At the end of an amazing season there is only one thing left to do , and that is to pick French Football Weekly’s Team of the Year. We rounded up the best Ligue 1 experts around, and Jonathan, and we got them to select eleven players into a 4-2-3-1 formation. Ladies and gentleman we are proud to present the FFW 2012 Team of the Year.

This team was selected after counting the votes of ten Ligue 1 experts. Now it would only be fair to let you see who voted for who.

  • Wowsers. OK, now I want to see them set out in formation wearing little FFW T-shirts…

Anyway – 5 French players in there, would that compare favourably with the ratio of domestic players in, say, a Prem best-of?

    • Aditya

I only see 4 players who were not trained by French clubs in their teenage years. Belhanda, Hazard have both come from French youth academies. So make it 7 French trained players in there.

      • Good point – was going to mention Belhanda’s youth teaming with Les Bleuets, and anyway it looks very different from some of the Prem ones I have seen. Promising.

  • Spot on in every department

Only difference from the official UNFP Team of the Season is Sirigu in goal ahead of Lloris and Mbiwa in defence ahead of Hilton. Interesting to see both Mavuba and Capoue there ahead of Mvila, Alou Diarra and Matuidi (all three of whom made the provisional France squad ahead of Mavuba and Capoue).

    • Andrew

There is no way Diarra or Matuidi should be ahead of Mavuba and Capoue in any poll or team selection. Both have been much better than the two selected for the France squad.

      • Aditya

Agreed. But Matuidi is a left-footed DM a unique case in French setup which appeals to Blanc. Diarra is not at all worthy of inclusion. He does provide some experience but given that he is no where close to first team someone like Mavuba or Capoue would be more useful in providing competition.

      • Jameel Ali

I wasn’t suggesting that those players should be ahead of them…. Just thought it was interesting that players that have had better seasons have been left out in favour of 3 others.
