Aitana Bonmati has been fully rewarded. Barça’s star midfielder has signed a historic new four-year contract with the biggest salary ever given to a female footballer. With her previous contract coming to an end, the reigning Ballon d’Or Feminino winner was in Chelsea’s sights, ready to pay the €3 million release clause, but the 26-year-old Catalan’s story will continue to be written at her training club, with whom she has won three of the last four Champions Leagues.
According to the Spanish press, Bonmati now exceeds one million euros in annual salary, while her teammate Alexia Putellas, the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner, had the highest salary in women’s football with emoluments amounting to 800,000 euros annually. In the national team, the two star players won the 2023 World Cup organized in Australia and New Zealand as well as the 2023-2024 Nations League by beating the French team in the final.

The star players of the United States, however, earned much more when counting all their income. Salaries in the American championship (the NSWL) do not exceed 600,000 euros per year, but Alex Morgan, for example, pocketed 6 million dollars in advertising contracts to be the richest female footballer in 2023. She retired on September 8, at the age of 35.
For comparison, the best players in the French D1 also enjoy XXL salaries: Marie-Antoinette Katoto peaks at nearly 700,000 euros gross per year at PSG, while Wendie Renard, Kadidiatou Diani and Ada Hegerberg are on 600,000 euros per year at OL.
