The Three Lions are looking for a new permanent manager after Gareth Southgate stepped down following a second successive Euro final defeat. He made 102 appearances in charge during his eight-year reign.
Lee Carsley, who led England Under-21s to the 2023 European Championship, has been given interim responsibility. There has been talk that Guardiola could be approached to take over in 2025, with the six-time Premier League winner yet to extend his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
Lineker believes it
Guardiola said of his future: ” I have to decide what I want to do in my life. Whether I want to continue here, take a break, coach the national teams or not, there are many things to do.”
These comments led former England striker Lineker to speak on the Rest Is Football podcast: “A few days ago I saw an interview with Pep Guardiola in which he was asked, in a press conference, if he was interested in England. And you know, most people put that question aside, but he certainly didn’t. The way he spoke made me think he might be interested in the job. And the fact that Carsley was appointed interim manager and Pep’s contract ends at the end of the season… However, maybe I’m just taking my wishful thinking a bit!”
Former Three Lions player Alan Shearer added:
“A couple of people have told me that, but I don’t know, it could just be a rumour, but you never know, so I think it’s a wise decision for them to give Carsley the job and take their time to see what happens. I mean, they have a game in a month, less? So I think it would have been very difficult to name someone in such a short period of time. This gives them time to sit down and see the bigger picture.”
