Rodri and Alvaro Morata know their sanction. Responsible for having sung the chant “Gibraltar is Spanish” at the end of the Euro 2024 final won by Spain against England (2-1), on July 14, the captain of the Roja and his teammate had caused controversy on social networks.
The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) then responded by filing a formal complaint with UEFA against the two European champions. Indeed, despite its location on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar has been a British Overseas Territory since 1713.
“They have brought the sport of football into disrepute”
On Wednesday, UEFA’s disciplinary bodies found both men guilty. The Manchester City defensive midfielder and the AC Milan striker were each given one-match suspensions.
UEFA thus accuses the Spanish internationals of
“failing to respect general principles of conduct, violating basic rules of decent conduct, using sporting events for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature and bringing the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute.”
