Last week, Real Madrid missed out on signing Leny Yoro, who was their main target as a centre-back in this summer’s transfer window. Yoro, who was in the final year of his contract at Lille, joined Manchester United for a fee that could rise to €70 million in the future.
Yoro would have preferred to join Spain, but he gave up waiting for the reigning European champions to reach an agreement with Lille. One of the reasons he was convinced to join Man United was a ten-minute chat he had with Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand.
Real will regret
Yoro himself revealed this in a recent interview, and Relevo pointed out that Real Madrid used a similar ploy 13 years ago when they signed Raphael Varane from RC Lens. At the time, the teenager was convinced by Zinedine Zidane – coincidentally, Man United were one of the clubs trying to sign Varane before he opted for the Whites.
Real Madrid could regret their decision not to dig into their pockets for Yoro, especially since they have no other clearly identified target.
