Buoyed by a double from Amine Gouiri, OM won 4-0 against RC Strasbourg, Friday evening at the opening of Ligue 1, in a Vélodrome which caught fire.

OM must savor the moment in these complicated times. While Frank McCourt’s club is forced to sell many players this summer (Mason Greenwood has already been sold to Fenerbahçe, while awaiting the departure of other big salaries), Bruno Genesio’s team ideally launched its season by beating RC Strasbourg 4-0, Friday evening, in the opening of Ligue 1. The Stade Vélodrome completely caught fire during a superb second half.

Far from the complicated football of Roberto De Zerbi, Genesio’s Marseillais had shown real promise during the preparation meetings against Athletic Bilbao and Atlético de Madrid. It may have lacked talent or determination, like the unconverted chances by Angel Gomes, Amine Harit and Amine Gouiri in the first half, but the rest was idyllic.

The OM festival in the 2nd period

Gouiri scored twice at the start of the second half, well served by Gomes (46th) then transforming a penalty obtained by the hard-hitting Igor Paixao (66th). Guéla Doué made a mistake on the Brazilian by very poorly managing a ball recovery in his area. And this, five minutes after the exclusion of Samir El Mourabet for a kick on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (59th).

At 11 against 10, OM could not miss the opportunity to start their season with a success and two goals at the end of the match sent the supporters into delirium. The young Keyliane Abdallah, 20, opened his account among the professionals by scoring from the left (89th), then a cross from the same right winger was repelled by the Strasbourg defense for the strong recovery of Hojbjerg (96th). The Marseillais continue with a shock in Monaco, while Racing already has its back against the wall before challenging RC Lens.
