Olympique Lyonnais won against AS Monaco this Sunday for the 31st day of Ligue 1 (3-2). A victory which offers the champion title to PSG.
The poster looked good, but no one would have imagined, a few months ago, that Olympique Lyonnais could approach it with European objectives. Last December 15, Pierre Sage’s team, then on the brink of collapse, carried out the perfect hold-up by signing a precious success on the rock (1-0) to begin its first real series in Ligue 1. From the Water has flowed under the bridges since then, and OL has regained its health after a well-negotiated winter transfer window.
In the nailbits to obtain a qualifying ticket for the Europa League and qualified for the final of the Coupe de France, the Rhone club however has a lot to do with the calendar. A week after a big setback at the Parc des Princes against Paris Saint-Germain (1-4), OL measured themselves against the best behind the champion, AS Monaco. A dashing team which has a string of great performances, notably with two capital successes against Brest (2-0) and Lille (1-0).
OL didn’t give up
The Principality club therefore had all the assets to look OL in the eye at Groupama Stadium. And he confirmed his sparkling form. Despite the absence of Golovin, Adi Hütter’s team found the resources to take the upper hand at the start of the match. Ben Yedder showered the Groupama Stadium with a perfectly adjusted recovery on the edge of offside, in a cloud of smoke (0-1, 1st).
But this OL has something to answer for. And he is often played by his captain Alexandre Lacazette. The home scorer once again showed his opportunism to quickly equalize with a fox goal, in his style this season (1-1, 22nd). Involved in this achievement, Benrahma then put on the goalscoring costume by picking up a ball that was lying around, a few minutes later (2-1, 26th).
The second act was just as contested, with the lines stretching out as fatigue gained ground. Lyon tried to manage their advantage but the inevitable Ben Yedder put the two teams back on level terms with a powerful helmet strike on the hour mark (2-2, 60th). It was without counting on a final dazzling performance from Lyon. Put into orbit by Lacazette, the explosive Fofana raced at the end to deliver OL (3-2, 84th). A coup which relaunched the Rhone club in this final sprint and offered PSG the 12th championship title in its history.
