Leaving for Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappé has already chosen his next number for next season. It should be number 9, which he (almost) never wore during his career.

Kylian Mbappé has made his choice. According to AS, the Bondynois has decided which number he will wear at Real Madrid next season. And unsurprisingly, it will not be number 7, his current number at Paris Saint-Germain, which is owned by Vinicius Jr at the Merengues.

Mbappé could have opted for No. 10, the one he wears in the France team. But the future of Luka Modric is not yet completely written, and the French international should therefore opt for number 9. This number has been vacant since the departure of Karim Benzema last summer, as if Real were waiting for a high-profile striker to pick it up. We can also see meaning for Mbappé, because 9 was the number of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo when he arrived in Madrid, when 7 was taken by the legend Raul.

7 with PSG, 10 with the Blues

During his career, Mbappé almost never wore number 9. This only happened during the 2016-2017 season with Monaco, in the Coupe de France. With ASM, the Bondy prodigy started with number 29 before taking number 10 in the summer of 2017, for… a single Ligue 1 match, before joining PSG.

In Paris, Mbappé also started with number 29. He only regained number 7 in 2018, when Lucas Moura left. In the French team, Mbappé started with the 20 and the 12 during his first selections, before settling with the n°10 from 2017. The n°7 and 9 of Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud were not accessible.
