Real Madrid’s victory over Sevilla FC on Sunday evening could be called into question by a refereeing irregularity.
Real Madrid temporarily pushed Girona to nine points – and Barça to eight points – by beating Sevilla FC on Sunday with a goal from Luka Modric at the end of the match (1-0). An important victory in the title race which could however be called into question. A strange controversy has emerged in Spain in recent hours.
In the 63rd minute of play, the match referee, Isidoro Diaz de Mera, had to leave the pitch, suffering from a muscle injury in his right calf. The person concerned was then replaced by the fourth referee, Carlos Fernandez Buergo. However, the latter was not necessarily authorized to officiate in a La Liga opposition where video assistance is in force.
A questionable goal?
Referee of Primera RFEF, in the Spanish third division, Carlos Fernandez Buergo does not have the required certificate to direct official games where the VAR system is accessible. An imperative recalled in article 189 of the regulations of the Spanish Football Federation.
This is therefore a loophole for Sevilla FC to exploit in the context of a possible claim. Especially since VAR was called upon to validate Luka Modric’s goal on Sunday evening while the Andalusians denounced an initial offside position by Antonio Rüdiger.
