Bayern Munich have confirmed their decision to part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.
Bayern and Tuchel have reached an agreement to part ways next summer after crisis negotiations. The Bundesliga champions will now begin work behind the scenes to appoint a new coach. Xabi Alonso, the Bayer Leverkusen coach, and Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool icon, are among those already considered for the position.
Bayern president Jan-Christian Dreesen confirmed Tuchel’s departure in an official statement released on Wednesday: “During an open and quality conversation, we made the decision to mutually end our collaboration this summer. Our goal is to carry out a sporting reorganization with a new coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every member of the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. I also hold the team accountable. Especially in the Champions League, we are confident that after the 0-1 first leg defeat against Lazio Rome, we will qualify for the quarter-finals in the second leg in our fully occupied Allianz Arena, with our fans behind us . »
Tuchel added of the decision: “We have agreed to end our collaboration at the end of this season. Until then, my coaching team and I will of course continue to do everything in our power to ensure maximum success. »
Tuchel, it’s over!
Tuchel was appointed in March 2023 to replace Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern and led the club to an eleventh consecutive Bundesliga title in his first two months in charge. However, the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager has struggled to find a good balance within the team and results have deteriorated this season, with Bayern eight points behind Leverkusen in the league after 22 days.
Bayern also exited the DFB-Pokal in the second round and will have to fight to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League after losing the first leg of their last-16 tie against Lazio. That result was interspersed with damaging Bundesliga defeats to Leverkusen and Bochum, and the board decided a change would be necessary this summer, with Tuchel’s contract set to be terminated a year early.
