Former FC Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font continued his criticism of Joan Laporta.

Font was defeated by Laporta in the club’s 2021 presidential election, with the latter receiving 54.2% of the vote. The two have remained in conflict since then, with Font regularly opting for public criticism of Laporta’s management during a difficult financial period for FC Barcelona.

Font recently criticized Laporta’s use of advisors linked to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the lack of investment in Barcelona. He also claimed that last season’s league title should not distract from the club’s deeper problems, amid a possible attempt to challenge Laporta’s presidency in the future.

Messi, the sea serpent of a return to Barça

The emotional argument of Lionel Messi leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 is a key part of Font’s stance and he blames Laporta for not retaining the Argentine. “For me, this is the biggest mistake of his mandate and of the contemporary history of the club,” he declared in an interview with RAC1.

“Messi could have been part of a solution and we are not aware of the sporting cost that this represented for Barça.” Font also said he would seek to bring Messi back to the club, if elected in 2025, despite his contract with Inter Miami which runs until the end of 2026.
