As the PSG travel to Rennes this Sunday evening for the 8th round of Ligue 1, the atmosphere is not great within the Parisian club. And just like his team, Kylian Mbappé is going through a rough patch. How can we explain the drop in form of the PSG’s star player?
This Sunday evening, Paris Saint-Germain is heading to Rennes. The game will kick off at 8:45 pm. The Parisians, in a slump, will try to bounce back. They are coming off a disappointing draw at Clermont (0-0) and a humiliating defeat at Newcastle (4-1) last Wednesday. And just like his team, Kylian Mbappé is experiencing a real downturn.
A disrupted start to the season
The PSG star has not scored in three games. Last Wednesday at Newcastle, Mbappé had his worst game since arriving in Paris six years ago. One shot and only four touches inside the box. Since his ankle injury that forced him to leave the field during the match against Marseille, Kylian Mbappé’s form has been on the decline. This is compounded by the lack of familiarity in a team that has been disrupted by the departures of Neymar, Messi, and Verratti, and the arrivals of Kolo Muani, Dembélé, and Ugarte. Not to mention a new coach, and therefore a new tactics.
But for national team coach Didier Deschamps, this rough patch is only temporary. “He is obviously not in his best shape, in line with his club’s results. However, I am not worried about Kylian, I know him well enough to know that he cannot be satisfied with what he is doing,” said the French national team coach.
The player’s inner circle is not worried. “It’s just a slump, nothing serious,” say the PSG star’s close associates. And it even happens to the greatest players; the Parisian forward has quite respectable statistics, with a total of eight goals scored compared to nine at the same time last season. It’s up to Kylian Mbappé to wake up and lead the revolt at PSG.
