All that remained was the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to win the case of Joris Gagnon (27) in his trial against Sevilla FC, after his failure in the face of Spanish justice. The French central defender had attacked his former club for unfair dismissal in 2021. The Andalusian club had dismissed their player after he returned to training overweight. But the highest authority of world sport ruled in favor of the Andalusian team. If the footballer claimed more than 4,600,000 euros in compensation for his dismissal, Sevilla has paid nothing and will not have to pay anything to the former Rennais. As a reminder, the native of Bondy is still without a club since his contract termination with Saint-Étienne in May 2022.

“The Court of Arbitration for Sport has issued an award confirming that the dismissal of player Joris Gnagnon for failing to maintain an appropriate weight for competition as the primary cause of dismissal was justified. The Court ruled in favor of Sevilla FC in the procedure it used with the player, behaving appropriately and requiring the player to be serious and rigorous in his profession. The sentence puts an end to a long procedure which began after the player’s reintegration after the pandemic, arriving at the club with a significant amount of excess weight, which he did not correct despite four disciplinary procedures initiated against him. The player had the opportunity to comply with the prescriptions and advice of the medical and nutritional services, as well as the sports services, in order to regain his physical fitness, but he did not comply on his own initiative and therefore ended up to be fired”we can read in the press release from the Andalusian club.
