Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Lionel Messi will reunite with another of his former FC Barcelona teammates at Inter Miami, after Luis Suarez bowed out in his final match for Gremio.
Suarez scored the only goal of the match in his last appearance for Gremio, who beat Vasco da Gama in front of a packed house. The veteran’s family joined him on the field as he bid farewell to fans.
The 36-year-old joined the Brazilian club in January and scored 27 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions before his departure was announced earlier this week.
Romano revealed that Suarez was negotiating the final details of his contract with Inter Miami before joining them for the new MLS season in March.
The contract will be valid for one year, according to Romano, with an option to extend for another year, which will likely depend on Suarez’s fitness after the Uruguayan admitted he was in constant pain due to a career marked by the wounds.
“I can feel the pain, my body speaks for me. I want to enjoy and decide for myself after a long career,” Suarez said about his future. I need to rest, enjoy my family… then fate will know where I will be in the future”.
Suarez has opened up about the pain that has affected him in recent years, admitting that he has to take medication constantly before matches and that it has even stopped him from playing with his son.
“ A few days before each match I take three pills and a few hours before playing I get an injection. Otherwise, I can’t play. I have to think that in maybe five years I won’t be able to play five-a-side football with my friends anymore.
“The truth is that the first steps in the morning are very painful. Everyone who sees me thinks it’s impossible for me to play. My son asks me to play with him and I just can’t.”
