Angel Di Maria, the 35-year-old right winger, has announced that he will retire from international football after the next Copa América, which will take place in the United States in 2024.
The one nicknamed “El Fideo” was one of the key players for Argentina during its recent successes, notably by scoring the winning goal in the 2021 Copa América final against Brazil (1-0 ), then by scoring a goal in the final of the 2022 World Cup against France (3-3, tab 4-2). In 135 caps, the ex-Parisian scored 29 goals and provided 29 assists.
In an interview with Talks at Google, he explained his decision to end his career with Argentina. “The decision has been made. The Copa America will be my last major international competition. These choices are complicated and difficult to make, but a new generation is emerging. I know I could continue playing in the national team, but I don’t want to take the place of young players who have great potential.”said the Benfica striker.
