A group of death for the Blues at the Euro?

Seventeen teams are now guaranteed to participate in the Euro in Germany next summer, and the pots for the draw which will be played on September 2 are taking shape.

The memory of Euro 2020 is painful for the Blues. Consequence of their elimination in the round of 16 against Switzerland after having wasted a two-goal lead in the last ten minutes of regulation time. France, however, had the merit of coming out first in its group, unanimously recognized as “the group of death”. Didier Deschamps’ men had indeed faced Germany at home, Hungary at home and then Portugal.

By winning against Gribraltar on Saturday, France secured its place among the top seeds as expected, which guarantees it to avoid Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Spain and England, the other nations which will emerge in the first hat (the Three Lions only need to avoid taking a suitcase to North Macedonia for their last match). Didier Deschamps’ men thus seem to be safe from an overly complicated draw.

However, the Blues could come across some big names during the draw. In hat 2, the nation to avoid for France will undoubtedly be Denmark, against whom the vice-world champions had to work last winter at the World Cup to win 2-1 thanks to a goal from Kylian Mbappé in the 86the minute. Two European leaders will probably emerge in hat 3: the Netherlands, Croatia and Italy, at least if the Nazionale, the reigning European champion, escapes from the Ukrainian trap this Monday evening. Finally, hat 4 could welcome Switzerland, already qualified…
