Brazilian legend Marcelo has revealed that he spoke to his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo about joining him at Al-Nassr before his move to Fluminense.

Both men enjoyed many illustrious seasons at Real Madrid, and the Brazilian eventually ended his stay in the Spanish capital in 2022. But an initial move to Olympiakos did not go as planned and Marcelo decided to leave the club five months later, becoming a free agent in February this year.

The five-time Champions League winner says there are plenty of opportunities coming his way, including several offers from Saudi Arabia. One of them came from Al-Nassr, Ronaldo’s current employer, and Marcelo revealed that the two men had discussed the possibility of renewing their partnership after a five-year absence. But ultimately, the 35-year-old felt an innate desire to return to his boyhood club, almost a decade later.

Marcelo told the Charla podcast (via O Jogo): “ We (Marcelo and Ronaldo) talked about it some time ago. I had offers to leave, not only there (Al Nassr), but I needed to come back here (to Brazil), to my roots. Something told me I had to come back“.

The Brazilian veteran has made a magical return to his childhood club. Marcelo helped the Rio de Janeiro side win the first Copa Libertadores in their history earlier this month, following a 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors in the final. The full-back hopes this continental success will carry Fluminense into the league, when they face Sao Paulo on November 23.
