But how was this valid goal denied to the Reds by VAR?
There are days when all the elements are against you, and that was the case for Liverpool. Reduced to nine, the Reds put up heroic resistance to Tottenham before cracking in the 96th minute, with an own goal from the unfortunate Joël Matip (2-1).
But the worst part of all this is that Jurgen Klopp’s men were clearly harmed by the refereeing. Beyond the two red cards inflicted on Curtis Jones and Diego Jota, considered harsh, there is this goal denied to Luis Diaz in the first period, at 0-0. The Colombian was wrongly flagged offside, even though he was clearly in play, and the VAR did not intervene.
Luis Diaz’s (Liverpool) goal against Tottenham should have been awarded yesterday. 🤏
The Premier League refereeing body has admitted the decision to disallow the goal was a “significant human error”. 😮

The Premier League acknowledged the facts, citing “a human error”, judging that the VAR should have intervened in this action to correct the decision taken by the referees on the field.
Sky Sports explains what happened, and the story is quite incredible. In fact, the VAR referees thought the goal had been awarded. Looking at the first images, they saw that Luis Diaz was in play, and did not notice any error. The verification thus ended, communicating to the main referee that the decision taken was the correct one. This gross error cost Liverpool a goal… and perhaps a few points for the Reds.
