The Women’s World Cup is approaching and France still does not have a designated broadcaster. A situation that exasperates a legend of the Blue, Marinette Pichon. The former player of the French team is now trying to act in person.

The French women’s team is threatened with a black screen at the next World Cup. This will take place next July in Australia and New Zealand and FIFA has not found a broadcaster in France. Despite its repeated complaints, the world body has not received financial offers that live up to its expectations. The standoff dragged on, forcing Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castera to intervene in the case. Can the state fix the situation? Marinette Pichon did not wait to get the answer to react on her side. The legend of Les Bleues with 112 selections and 81 goals can no longer stand this blockage.

Pichon launches a petition to have a broadcaster

She launched an online petition on May 25 for a French channel to buy the rights to the World Cup and broadcast the matches. She explains her approach in a text accompanying the petition. ” With less than two months to go, the Women’s World Cup still has no broadcaster in France. It would be scandalous if the matches of Les Bleues were not broadcast on French television. (…) I ask the French channels to buy the rights and broadcast the upcoming matches. It would be fair: so-called women’s football is passionate, as proof of this the success of the last World Cup (2019) and the last Euro (2022) “, she writes.

His initiative begins to attract people. 98,000 people signed her petition, highlighting the desire of a certain part of the population to see the matches of her national women’s team. However, not sure yet that this will change the minds of the main French audiovisual groups. They always expect more flexibility from FIFA and they are not the only ones. As a reminder: England, Germany, Italy and Spain are in the same situation regarding the broadcast of the 2023 World Cup. And the fear of disappointing audiences for these matches in the middle of summer will probably not cause the outflow of millions of euros from the pockets of private broadcasters, who will not buy an event at a loss.
