Thomas Tuchel admits Bayern Munich’s failure to sign Joao Palhinha from Fulham made him ‘sad’ as he has no idea what happened.
Palhinha looked set to join the Bundesliga for £55million, but the deal was conditional on Fulham signing a replacement, which the club were unable to do. The operation was so advanced that Palhinha had his medical and even met his media obligations before being called off, much to the chagrin of the Bayern manager.
Tuchel also openly complained to German journalists at a press conference. “I was sad because I knew how much Joao Palhinha wanted to join us and what the player would have brought us. I don’t know exactly what happened.”
Bayern also attempted to sign Armel Bella-Kotchap from Southampton and Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea on the closing day, but those deals also fell through.
The club signed five new players this summer, including England captain Harry Kane, but failed to sign any of the targets it had set at the end of the window.
