Like a symbol. Seventy years after the victory of the Englishman Stanley Matthews, the very first winner in the history of the Ballon d’Or, Harry Kane received the supreme individual award this Monday, in London, where the ceremony was organized this year. The Bayern Munich scorer narrowly beat Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, who completed the podium. A victory that raises questions…
On the set of the Spanish show El Chiringuito, Guti did not hide his doubts about the ceremony organized in London. The former Real Madrid midfielder notably pointed out a coincidence that he considers particularly disturbing: the award was presented in the English capital and won by a London player.
“It turns out that for the 70th edition of the Ballon d’Or, the ceremony takes place in London and is won by a Londoner. What a coincidence! Amazing, isn’t it? »quipped the Spaniard, visibly unconvinced by the scenario of the evening.
Guti’s suspicions
The former Spain international then went further, suggesting that the result might not be the result of sporting merit alone. “It’s quite a coincidence that they’re holding the awards in London and it’s a Londoner who wins, isn’t it? Frankly, everything seems directed, completely,” he lamented.
Guti also recalled that he had always had reservations about this individual distinction, believing that its award could follow other logics than just performances on the field. The fact remains that the words of the former Madrilenian are a matter of suspicion; no element presented in his statements allows, in itself, to establish that the result would have been arranged.
