The French Football Federation is expected to officially withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino for the upcoming FIFA presidential election. According to The Teamthe FFF’s position must be decided this Thursday during a meeting of its executive committee, before a public announcement expected in the afternoon. Unless there is a major turnaround, the French federation will therefore no longer support the Italian-Swiss leader, candidate for a new mandate during the election organized on March 18, 2027 in Rabat. A decision notably linked to the deep disagreement of the FFF with Infantino’s project, ultimately abandoned, to open the capital of the World Cup to private investors.
France would thus join several federations which have already distanced themselves from the president of FIFA. Sweden, Scotland, Italy and Belgium have officially withdrawn their support, as has Sandor Csanyi, one of the vice-presidents of the FIFA Council. Despite the numerous criticisms and calls for his resignation caused by his privatization project, Infantino remains for the moment the only known candidate for his succession. The executive committee of the FFF must also take advantage of its meeting on Thursday to discuss other issues, in particular the beginnings of Ligue 3, the calendar as well as the proposed law concerning the reform of professional sport.
