Under the eyes of Luis Campos, present in the stands of the Stade de France, PSG won the Gambardella Cup, only the second in its history after 1991. The French Cup for U19 teams garnishes the Parisian club’s record while Luis Enrique’s team will obviously compete in a second Champions League final in a row in the hope of lifting the big-eared cup for a second time.
The outcome of the Gambardella was scheduled as a curtain-raiser to the final of the Coupe de France RC Lens-OGC Nice and offered quite a spectacle. The teams first offered four goals in the first period to their respective supporters in the presidential stand (certain Lensois supporters gradually reached their seats). Younes Idder opened the scoring for PSG (12th), the Héraultais reversed the situation thanks to Noah Vidal (18th) and Robin Thiland-Hérard (22nd), before the Parisian equalizer signed Mathis Jangeal (40th)!
PSG at 10 against 11
The second half was much more tense and an astonishing event took place. The match referee, without the help of VAR, excluded the wrong PSG player! Samba Coulibaly mowed down a Montpellier striker and should have seen red but it was David Boly who was sent to the locker room. And Boly did leave the pitch – even though his captain, Emmanuel Mbemba, should have given the correct identity of the culprit.
At 11 against 10, the young people of MHSC did not manage to score the coronation goal and in the 95th minute of the match, before the expected penalties, on a final clearance, Pierre Mounguenge collapsed in the area and the referee gave a penalty to PSG! Mathis Jangeal gave victory to the Parisians (96th) and their coach Thomas Leyssales.
