PSG joined Arsenal yesterday in the Champions League final. In a tense and intense match, the defending champion was able to resist Bayern to concede a draw (1-1, 6-5 on aggregate) synonymous with access to Budapest, venue for the final on May 30. The capital club can still achieve the double, a very rare performance since the reform of the competition in 1992. This qualification will also do a lot of good for Parisian finances, especially in a context where domestic television rights are in free fall.
There should be no mistake either, the leader of Ligue 1 is the only player in the championship who can live without this financial windfall. All other clubs will be obliged to sell players to balance their accounts and reduce their payroll. The latest DNCG report on the 2024/2025 season is enough to give you a cold sweat. It promises to be much worse next year. If PSG can ignore the TV rights of the L1, it cannot free itself from the prize money of the Champions League.
PSG can receive €150 million in the event of victory
By validating their qualification for the final last night, the Ile-de-France residents added €18.5 million to the overall check that UEFA will pay them at the end of the season. In the event of victory in 3 weeks, a new bonus of €6 million will be slipped into the envelope, and we will even have to count on an additional €4 million as a bonus for participation in the European Super Cup at the start of the school year. We’re not there yet. In total, PSG is already certain of receiving €139.4 million at the end of the competition. The total amount could therefore rise to almost €150 million if the team goes through with it.
In detail, this money can be explained by the scale set by UEFA. All teams qualified for the Champions League pocket €18.62 million in participation. A victory in the championship phase brings in €2.1 million and a draw €700,000. The final ranking of the league phase offers new benefits, between €275,000 for the last and €9.9 million for the first, in addition to a bonus of €2 million for teams directly qualified for the round of 16, and €1 million for the play-offs. Each additional lap completed increases the score.
Image generation in progress
Qualification for the round of 16 offers €11 million, then €12.5 million for the quarter-finals, €15 million for the semi-finals and therefore €18.5 million for the final, plus the bonus of €6 million for the winner. As a reminder, the gains obtained relate to three elements, participation at 27.5%, performance (37.5%) and value (35%), determined according to the country’s contribution to TV rights for the competition and the UEFA coefficient for the last 5 years of the club concerned. Based on this little clever calculation, it is Arsenal who are at the top of the current prize money with €143.2 million collected. The Gunners notably finished 1st in the first phase when PSG settled for 11th place.
