A public holiday in England, Chelsea played at 4 p.m. this Monday against Nottingham Forest. And Blues supporters would have preferred to do something other than see their team concede its sixth defeat in a row in the Premier League (1-3).
Led by interim Calum McFarlane, after the ouster of Liam Rosenior, the Londoners had a terrible start to the match with a goal awarded to Taiwo Awoniyi (0-1, 2nd) and a penalty stupidly conceded by Malo Gusto, guilty of a shirt pull on a center that was flying out. Igor Jesus did not hesitate to make the break (0-2, 15th).
In the fight with Jules Koundé for a starting place among the Blues at the World Cup, Malo Gusto is not escaping the current disaster of his team, which pales in comparison to the 16th in the ranking. Forest have been doing much better for two months, certainly (no defeats in the Premier League over the period), but they weren’t even the typical team because Vitor Fereira rotated in anticipation of the Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa.
Chelsea score their first goal in two months
After a missed penalty by the sad Cole Palmer (45th + 10) and a new goal from Awoniyi (0-3, 52nd), Stamford Bridge began to empty. Joao Pedro had a goal denied for being offside by a few centimeters (73rd) before scoring on a nice return (1-3, 90th+3). Imagine that this is Chelsea’s first goal in the Premier League since… March 4. To provide some context, it was before the round of 16 first leg of the Champions League against PSG. So it’s been an eternity.
In the standings, Chelsea remain 9th, and miss the opportunity to get closer to 6th place. There is only this FA Cup final against Man City in two weeks to save the season.
