The French Football Federation no longer only wants to oppose Gianni Infantino, it now intends to participate in the search for his successor. After officially withdrawing its support for the FIFA president on Thursday with a view to the election of March 18, 2027, the FFF executive committee unanimously decided to work on an alternative. “ With my colleagues at the Comex, we consider that the trust placed in Gianni Infantino has been broken. The current conduct of football is not what we want », explained Philippe Diallo. A major turnaround since the president of the FFF had again supported his candidacy at the end of June. Several decisions and controversies have since deteriorated this relationship, notably the ultimately abandoned project to open the World Cup capital to private investors.
The FFF now wants to consult French and foreign governance specialists in order to build a project likely to unite around a candidate opposed to Infantino. “ We have decided to open a series of consultations to contribute to UEFA’s discussions with a legitimate and unifying project. And, when the time comes, the nomination of the candidate who will wear our colors for the next election », specified Diallo. The Federation intends in particular to speak with Kevin Lamour, former FIFA number 3 fired this summer after his criticism of Infantino, but also with academics, international organizations and football personalities. The name of Arsène Wenger, currently director of world football development at FIFA, appears among the profiles which could provide food for thought. However, time is running out: candidacies for the FIFA presidency must be submitted before November 18.
